trivago alumni – Jorge Barrera

Jorge Barrera, a former analytical mastermind at trivago, left us almost a year ago. So we thought we’d drop him a line to see what he’s up to now.

Life at trivago: Hi Jorge, Nice to ‘e-meet’ you! let’s go back to before trivago. Where are you from originally, and what brought you to trivago in the first place?

Jorge Barrera: I’m originally from Colombia, but I was in Virginia before going to trivago. I went to Virginia for graduate studies and got involved into research and academia. I was feeling curious about seeing the world from another perspective and a friend told me about trivago. So I applied and lucky enough I had the opportunity to join the company.

Lat: How long did you work at trivago, and in what role?

JB: I worked for trivago for almost two years. I was in BI (hello BI-ers :)) and worked closely with the freesearch (aka search and destroy) team. It’s hard to pick a favourite memory… there are many good ones. It is funny that although I remember special occasions like trivago on tour and other events that I fully enjoyed, I remember with higher affection more simple but spontaneous happenings like random coffee/ice-cream talks. Also nerdy times like when freesearch was accepted and when concepts like “5-stars” were incorporated in the search. It was very exciting for my whole team.

Lat: If a friend asked you whether they should take a position at trivago, what would you say to them?

JB: If a friend asks me about taking a position at trivago, I would sayabsolutely. And I would be very happy for him/her. The growth and fun at trivago will be life changing.

Lat: What made you decide to leave trivago? And what are you doing now?

JB: Now I am an assistant professor at the University of Florida. I’m doing research that involves data sciences and optimization for projects related to environmental sustainability and resiliency. I am closer to home and also I have relatives in town, including my first nephew who learned to walk some weeks after I moved in.

Lat: Thanks professor! and good luck in the future!
